Facial Surgery

Facelift

A facelift (rhytidectomy) helps restore a youthful countenance and eliminate wrinkles and sagging skin. This procedure tightens the skin and muscle on the face and neck and removes excess skin.

What to expect before, during and following a facelift:

Dr. Engen will take a complete medial history before the procedure is carried out in order to better understand each patient’s general health. Before and after photographs are also usually taken so that the final results can be better evaluated.

This procedure may be carried out at an outpatient surgical facility or at a hospital. Dr. Engen consults with each patient to determine the best place for the surgery to be performed and whether local or general anesthesia will be used. Patients having a facelift usually spend three to five hours in surgery.

Loose bandages are applied to the treated area and removed in a few days. The very fine sutures used during the surgery are removed by Dr. Engen about a week following the procedure. Most patients are prescribed antibiotics and oral pain medication during the first week as well. Patients should expect some swelling and/or discoloration right after the surgery, but this usually disappears within a week or two.

Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a week of the procedure, especially if they follow the instructions given to them after the surgery and during subsequent follow-up visits with Dr. Engen. Sunscreen should also be used for several weeks when outdoors during the day. Dr. Engen will consult with each patient to determine when full activity should be resumed.

Mini Facelift

A mini-facelift can help significantly address the early signs of aging in the lower facial areas, such as a sagging jaw line or nasolabial folds. A mini-lift is often performed in conjunction with dermal fillers and SmartLipo™. The mini-lift procedure, which is performed in the physician’s office, features significantly less recovery time than a traditional facelift. Most patients can have the small stitches removed and resume normal activities in about a week.

Endoscopic Procedures

Endoscopic procedures involve minimal incisions along the hairline, using a small fiberoptic lens to enable the surgeon to see what is happening during the procedure from beneath the skin. They are used in procedures such as brow lifts and upper facelifts to tighten and smooth the skin on the upper portion of the face.

Endoscopic brow lifts can elevate brows and reduce wrinkling in the forehead. (Back to top.)

Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer extracts fat deposits from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen or outer thighs, and transfers it to the face. This procedure can add volume to facial features, enhance facial contours, and reduce the facial hollowing that can come with age or significant weight loss. (Back to top.)

Ear Surgery (otoplasty)

Ear surgery (otoplasty) changes the shape and contour of the ears; it is usually performed to reduce the personal anxiety of individuals with outwardly protruding ears. (Back to top.)

Nose Surgery (rhinoplasty)

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) improves the size, shape and contour of the nose, creating a pleasing balance with other facial features. It is also used to correct congenital defects and traumatic injuries. (Back to top.)
